yellowstone park

Going south from the Badlands you see...

-        Lakota tribe reservations
wonderful high school designed like a traditional mask - so cool
we mean no disrespect, but there were hilarious place names...

lame deer??
Living conditions are poor and many live in poverty on reservations.
The treatment of First Nations tribes has been horrific. Suicide rates are very high.

-        bentonite clay quarries and processing

So how do you make money in this kind of land? You ranch, of course. And you bring in tourists. And then you dig up this....bentonite clay. Why? Well this clay is dried and processed and made into (wait for it) kitty litter (ok), cosmetics (hmmm), and chocolate (yikes!!). Try out this recipe for a chocolate peanut butter shake.

bentonite drying and processing plant
-       the beginning of wild west country

We could tell we had reached wild west country when we saw...

trophy animals talking to each other...
a chandelier of elk antlers
traditional ranch gates
hmmm- which will I take- my car or my horse?

        -   mountains and winter-again!

Yikes- thought we had left this behind! Winter again?
-   Yellow Stone National Park

We spent a day and drove through Yellow Stone National Park.
It is known for its animal wildlife and its geysers.

We were soooo lucky to see this calf having lunch!
Driving in Yellowstone was an adventure because we shared the road with...

There were wolf lovers watching packs of wolves (we did not see any – too bad)
elk !!

-      we didn't see any bears ...
but Yellow Stone is the park that a famous cartoon show is based on.
Watch this Easter episode of the famous Yogi Bear cartoon show.
  ...
- geysers and thermal land
this is why there are hot springs and geysers
the Norris hotsprings and geysers made gorgeous shapes in the snow

The heat just steams up from the land. Amazing.
It is like watching a hot plate of steaming food.
Of course the big attraction at the park is the largest geyser,Old Faithful.
She didn't do anything while we were there. Click here to see what she can do

Yellowstone in early spring was glorious but what about the other seasons?
We gotta go...
